FAQs

What the *?&! are you doing?

Air driving baby!

What is air driving?

Sweet driving moves with nothing but a bucket seat and a music track, bro.

Where are the events held?

The venue changes every time. Whether a place is suitable depends on loads of things: size, acoustics, whether anyone can get hold of the keys. The boys have hit the seats everywhere - from the little-known Cheeling Sea Cadets Club to the infamous Stonehaven Lawn Bowling Association Pavillions (cheers again Ethel!).

How do you become an air driver?

Anyone with a bit of time on their hands can do air driving, but to compete at official events you'll need to be off the road because of speeding. The main reason for this is usually a driving ban, which you need 12 points for, or 6 if you've been driving less than 2 years. You're also allowed to compete if you can't afford your insurance premiums because of points you've had for speeding. See summary of rules.

What if I don't have a bucket seat?

You can pick one up at any good car-part stockist. It's probably a good idea to start off in a well-padded armchair, and then invest in a real seat as your moves get sweeter and more pimpish.

Wouldn't it be better to do it in a real car?

Er... we haven't got cars, that's kind of the whole point!

What kind of music is best for air driving?

Whatever floats your boat! Drum and bass, RnB, hip hop, grime, etc. Dubstep is starting to get more popular now too. Just avoid metal and boybands, as these tend to make the crowd restless.

Who judges the routines?

The position of air driving judge isn't offered to just anyone. Unless they don't turn up, in which case it really is offered to just anyone. In the past it's been people like former winners Invisible Force (See Hall of Fame), The Feathers doorman Jimmy, and Kieran from Eagle Records in West London.

Don't any of you have girlfriends?

Surprisingly, no. For some reason, women don't seem to have much time for air driving. Maybe they prefer their men to have cars. And since it's mostly young men between 17 and 24 who get caught speeding, it doesn't look like there are going to be many girls becoming air drivers any time soon either. Read our appeal for girls.
